Until not too long ago, amalgam or metallic fillings was the standard of practice in dentistry. The amalgam (or silver) was needed for its strength, especially on chewing surfaces and for large cavities. The material from which these fillings are composed of can corrode and leak, causing black or purple staining in the teeth. If you're embarrassed by old fillings and tired of hiding your smile, talk to us about composite fillings.

Composite fillings are made of a material that actually bonds to the tooth for a tight seal. They are strong, stain-resistant, and colour-matched to the natural tooth, making them as invisible as possible.
Composite fillings also lack the sensitivity that is often associated with silver fillings. They are especially suited for smaller cavities and for patients who may have sensitivity to older metal fillings.

We do not recommend replacing metallic or "amalgam" fillings that are functioning well and are symptom free. There are many circumstances, however, when replacement is advisable. If that is the case, composite restorations are an aesthetically superior alternative.
